D&AD Ads

The return of Wimbledon has clearly reminded D&AD of some of the most exciting ad campaigns based around tennis. All 15 have received one of the body’s prestigious pencil awards in the past as press, digital and outdoor promotions. All are definitely worth a peek but the stunning Robinsons visuals really stand out for us!

Tennis AI

As much of a spectacle as Wimbledon is, we’ve all likely found ourselves dozing off to a monotonous bore-fest of a tennis match at some point in our lives. Luckily, IBM have come up with a solution. Through the use of data and their AI tool ‘Watson’, they’ll be predicting the most exciting matches based on the “competitive margin” between the players involved… And just in case you miss them, Watson will be creating its own highlights reel based on factors such as crowd reactions, and the relative importance of a point to the match result.

Tennis Gadgets

From serve speeds to the variety of shots used, stats are a massive part of tennis and we’ll certainly be bombarded wtih them this year at SW19. Devices capable of measuring all of this are popping up in droves so ‘Gadgets and Wearables’ have decided to publish a roundup of 10 key products on the market.

We love the glamour and the elegance of the all-white tennis outfits from the past. Now that Wimbledon is on, The V&A is selling prints of three shots photographer John French captured in the 1950s and 1960s. French shot beautiful female tennis players posing on the court and was one of London’s top fashion photographers back in the day.

Every year, during the tournament, the All England Club in Wimbledon serves 28,000kg of fresh English strawberries. Some of these are sourced very locally – they grow 100 feet underneath the streets of Clapham in an old basement that was used to shelter civilians during the Blitz. Growing Underground turned this into a business idea: They use the latest hydroponic systems and LED technology to grow strawberries in a perfect, pesticide-free environment. When the strawberry season is over, they provide restaurants with micro greens and salad leaves.
