1/4 Mile Arc by Phillip KK Smith III

Renowned for his installations that use light, colour and reflections to reinterpret spaces and environments, the American artist Philip K Smith III’s latest work is a dramatic addition to the seaside town of Laguna Beach in California. '1/4 Mile Arc' is a gentle arc of tall, polished stainless steel posts scrolling along the beach and reflecting the colours and shapes of the landscape as they change throughout the day and the seasons. Whether you love or hate it, we were inspired by how the architectural piece constantly change and challenges us to think again about our relationship with the natural and the manmade.

Packaging for Punton Di Leone Olive oil

What comes to mind when you think of olive oil packaging? Probably picturesque olive groves, rustic views of Tuscany and juicy close-ups of the perfect olive crop. That’s why we were struck by the new packaging for Punton Di Leone Olive Oil by Milanese design studio, The 6th, showcased on The Dieline this week. They’ve developed a series of charming animal illustrations for the bottles that depict the wildlife that inhabits the farm where the olives are harvested. The striking geometric illustrations of a turtledove, porcupine, hoopoe bird and deer create clever visual differentiation from competitors and offer a refreshingly original angle on communicating the provenance of the product.

ECAL Graphic Design. Type, Print, Digital, Stories

Thanks to AIGA’s eyeondesign blog for bringing this exciting new exhibition to our attention. ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) has a legendary reputation for its progressive, often avant garde, graphic design alumni. Now a unique exhibition of graduate work from the last 5 years allows visitors to get an impressive view of what makes the school so unique. Instead of arranging the work chronologically or by project, ECAL chose to group the work by colour, creating fascinating links between a broad range of work. The exhibition is showing at the Vitra Design Museum in Basel, as well as Paris and a tour of China.

Oi: The Knog Bike Bell

A beautiful and innovative new bike bell called ‘Oi’ has won the 2016 Victorian Premier's Design Award of the Year in Australia. A perfect blend of form and function, the Oi bike bell "demonstrates what good design can bring to an otherwise forgotten product”, according to judges of the award. The sleek design comes in five finishes: brushed aluminium, brass, copper, black and titanium, and we expect to see them at topping the christmas wish lists of many urban cyclists, many of whom consider the design of their bike and gear as important as the act of cycling itself. Read more on Dexinger

Design trends that need to end

With all the ‘round-ups’ of 2016 and 'look-aheads' to 2017 about at the moment, it was amusing to read Surface magazine’s tongue-in-cheek take on it all: "Please Stop: Design trends that need to end in 2017.” The entries are humorous, personal write-ups and it's a novel way to think about the ending of one year of design and the beginning of the next. It’s really got us thinking about the broader design trends we’d rather see come to an end, as well as the ones we want to see grow and prosper in the new year. What about you?
