Tabletop ‘smart gardens’

Caring for indoor plants is a common challenge. We’ve all had some office greenery that's wilted and faded despite everyone’s best efforts to nurture it, or at some point been bought an orchid that didn’t survive the month. The new LeGrow Smart Garden kit has been designed to change all this by offering a modular system of plant pots equipped with a humidifier, lighting and drainage to give you indoor gardening credentials a much needed boost. The plant pots can even charge your devices via USB ports

Re-drawing women

An interesting video report by the BBC this week looked at how women are portrayed in comic books and graphic novels is changing to tackle the problem of sexism within these steadily growing genres. The number of women reading and creating comics has grown in recent years and as a result the female characters in them are becoming much more diverse, both in how they look and dress, as well their characters and personalities. This is being led by the smaller, independent illustrators, artists and designers, with some even setting up special groups to provide a forum to talk about the issue, and the big players, such as Marvel, are slowly starting to listen and follow suit.

Junk Type

Photographer and Designer Bill Rose has spent a decade trawling through the junkyards and antique shops of America on a quest to document postwar American typography and design before it fades into obscurity. The fruits of his labour have been published in a new book, Junk Type, where 400 images capture this important niche of design history, “from Art Deco–inspired fonts… to clean graphic logos bearing the influence of European design of the 1960s.” As the old saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

'Illustrating the sad truth of everyday life’

Italian illustrator Marco Melgrati is becoming renowned for his clever and arresting images that capture poignant modern truths in striking simplicity. Working for newspapers and magazines, his bold images often hold a mirror up to the ugly truths of everyday life, including political corruption, social injustice and ‘social media narcissism’, as in the image shown. Thank you to Digital Arts for introducing us to his work.

NOT A PEEP

Piers Alsop and creative agency SQUINT/OPERA make a film where nothing is quite as it seems. Friend of SODA, Flora Mclean commisioned this film for her brand House of Flora. House of Flora is a fashion design and consultancy Studio located in London, specialising in avant-garde headwear for the catwalk, fashion campaigns and collectors. The headwear is often driven by materials: PVC, perspex, felt, leather, wood veneer, alluminium, steel and nylon and influenced by strong geometry and historical figures, as well as by concepts in modern art. Read our insightful interview with Flora about the state of design education here: The New Beautiful
