Whether you love or loathe liquorice, it’s hard not to like Bond’s eye-catching new packaging for the Scandinavian liquorice brand Allsorts. An update of their previous packaging for the brand, which introduced the bold geometry we see here, this version does away with colour in favour of a striking monochrome and silver design. The result brings the familiar sweets to the fore of the design, their minimal illustration style cleverly emphasising their iconic shapes.

With the John Lewis Christmas ad launched this week, from here on in there will be endless festive wintry scenes on all our screens, right up until the essential broadcasting of The Snowman [again] on Christmas Day. Seeing as you can’t avoid the onslaught of CGI snow, why not at least temper it by watching the beautiful video for Katie Melua’s new song Perfect World. Created by animators Karni and Saul, it’s a refreshing and alternative winter wonderland that both heartfelt and charming.

While we don’t want to dwell on the results of the US election here, we are grateful to Print magazine for drawing our attention to the exhibition “Revolution Times: Graphic Design and Counterculture Newspapers of the 1960s–1970s”, currently showing at the SFSU Design Gallery. It’s an interesting reminder that the media playing such a pivotal role in shaping current affairs is certainly no new thing, as these examples that reveal the struggle for equality, civic engagement and justice in the era so vividly show.

This week were struck by these dramatic images shot by Jim Mangan depicting renowned rally car driver Ken Block criss-crossing the impressive, lunar-like landscape of the desert in southern Utah. The images explore the relationship between man and environment, adding a burst of movement and life to these static, barren landscapes and contrasting billowing clouds of dust with monumental rock-faces.

‘Beautiful’ is probably not the first word that springs to mind when you think of bombs and missiles. However, in a tongue-in-cheek new project entitled ‘Corporate Warfare’, Benjamin Simon and Dirk Schuster of the German design studio Foreal have recognised the inherent beauty in the design of some of the world’s deadliest weapons and used it to explore the power and impact of well known international brands. As Fast.Co Design report: "The fact that the design languages of these companies (Facebook, McDonald's, Google and DHL) look right at home on a weapon of mass destruction is terrifying, but speaks to the brands' ubiquity.” As interesting and thought-provoking as it is, let's just hope this is one of those concept projects that goes no further!
