Meet the Grad: University for the Creative Arts Farnham's Xuanle Zheng

SODA's Meet the Grad series will run throughout the summer, showcasing our favourite final year projects from students across the UK.

Can you explain your project and what motivated you to do it ?

My project, MeowMate, is designed to create furniture and environments that cater specifically to the needs and preferences of cats. The motivation behind this project stemmed from observing that many pet products are overly idealized from a human perspective, often neglecting the actual needs and behaviours of pets. I wanted to bridge this gap by developing designs that are both functional and enjoyable for cats, providing them with a comfortable and stimulating environment.

What challenges did you encounter and how did you overcome them?

One of the primary challenges I faced was understanding the intricate preferences and behaviours of cats to ensure the designs were truly beneficial for them. This required extensive research and observation, as well as iterating on feedback from cat owners. Additionally, sourcing sustainable and cat-friendly materials was another hurdle. I overcame these challenges by collaborating with veterinarians and pet behaviourists, conducting user testing with actual pets, and continuously refining the materials and design based on feedback and observations.

What made you want to study design?

My passion for design was sparked by a desire to create solutions that improve daily life and address real-world problems. I have always been fascinated by the intersection of aesthetics and functionality, and how thoughtful design can enhance user experiences. This passion, combined with my love for animals, particularly inspired me to focus on designing products that cater to their well-being, leading me to pursue a career in design.

Where do you see your design career going in the future/what is your dream job?

In the future, I envision my design career focusing on creating innovative and sustainable products that enhance the lives of both humans and animals. My dream job would be to lead a design team in a company that values sustainability and animal welfare, where I can continue to develop products that cater to the specific needs of pets while also being eco-friendly. I aspire to be at the forefront of pet product design, advocating for designs that are both practical and enriching for pets.
